LDS History Issues I Would Ask President Hinckley to Confirm and Explain, If I Could (Revised)

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Some slight revisions here.  Fixed some errors regarding the Law of Adoption.  Included a question about the Council of 50, and 2 questions about women in LDS history (thanks to those who helped to collaborate).

I should also clarify that I’m not offering these as questions I would ask President Hinckley for the primary purpose of confirming the facts.  That would be nice, but I’m pretty confident in most of these facts. I would ask these questions with the following intent:

  • To find out if President Hinckley knows about all this stuff (we might assume that he does, but it would be interesting to find out if so, and how much).
  • To find out how President Hinckley would explain/justify each of these issues, in detail.
  • To put the church on record as to these facts, which (in my mind) would do 2 things….  1) Take the pressure off of those who discover these issues for themselves, to prevent them from being labeled as anti-Mormon or as “speaking ill of the Lord’s anointed” just for discussing them, and 2) Bring the general church membership up to speed, to help prevent (or minimize) inaccuracies from being passed along from generation to generation in the future.

My “Wicked” LDS Journey Part 5: “Something Bad”

Friday, December 15th, 2006

This entry is 5th in a series that begins here. For the full effect, please make sure to listen to the song below, while reading the lyrics.

Story Background: A major subplot in Wicked is the Wizard of Oz’s mistreatment and persecution of talking Animals. Basically, the Wizard begins inciting hatred and oppression of these talking animals (many of whom are prestigious professors, pastors and politicians within Oz). The result becomes their loss of sophistication, intelligence, and ultimately their ability to speak. As you hear Dr. Dillamond sing “Something “Baaaaad”, you are experiencing his slow reversion back to becoming an animal.

In “Something Bad,” you also experience the naiveté of Elphaba, when she says things like, “We must tell the Wizard. That’s why we HAVE a wizard. So nothing bad happens in Oz.” She thinks of him as the solution, when in reality, he is an important part of the problem.

My Recent Radio Appearance on KVNU’s “For the People”: The Mitt Romney and Andrew Sullivan Collision

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Hey all!

Tom Grover was kind enough to invite me to guest host his radio program tonight: KVNU’s “For the People” (though I’m thinking he may be regretting it a bit now). :)

I commented about this topic briefly on a recent BCC post here, basically thanking Mr. Sullivan for helping us get out into the open things that have been hidden and suppressed (privately and publicly) for far too long.

Anyway, the main topic of discussion was Andrew Sullivan’s recent blogging research/antics regarding Mormonism and Mitt Romney’s candidacy for U.S. President. In a little under a week, Sullivan has covered:
