Story Background: A major subplot in Wicked is the Wizard of Oz’s mistreatment and persecution of talking Animals. Basically, the Wizard begins inciting hatred and oppression of these talking animals (many of whom are prestigious professors, pastors and politicians within Oz). The result becomes their loss of sophistication, intelligence, and ultimately their ability to speak. As you hear Dr. Dillamond sing “Something “Baaaaad”, you are experiencing his slow reversion back to becoming an animal.
In “Something Bad,” you also experience the naiveté of Elphaba, when she says things like, “We must tell the Wizard. That’s why we HAVE a wizard. So nothing bad happens in Oz.” She thinks of him as the solution, when in reality, he is an important part of the problem.
