How Much, If Anything, Did Mitt Romney Pay Hugh Hewitt?

Monday, March 12th, 2007

OK…this title may appear to be a bit inflammatory and cynical — but I don’t mean it to be. I’m watching Hannity & Colmes, and they’re doing a feature on Mitt Romney. Sean Hannity seems very friendly to Romney…which is cool. But the main focus of the segment is an interview with Hugh Hewitt, who has written a book called, “A Mormon in the White House?” — making the case for Mitt Romney as President of the U.S.

I have a tiny bit of experience in the realm of publishing, and that experience inclines me to wonder if Romney paid Hewitt to write this book as an overall part of his White House strategy. I’m not saying that this is a horrible thing….it’s the American way…but I’m just wondering if Romney paid Hewitt to write this book, and if so, how much he paid? Any ideas? Guesses?

3 things that were interesting to me about Hewitt’s comments:

  • Hewitt claims that Romney is a Billionaire. I didn’t know he had that much $$$. Maybe I should be more careful about criticizing him. :)
  • Hewitt says that to write his book, he was granted access to, and spent time w/ LDS apostles. Again, not a bad thing, just interesting.
  • Hewitt claims that Romney will likely pick Jeb Bush as his Veep. That seemed crazy to me.

Anyway, I’m still not crazy about Romney. I’m trying really hard, but I just can’t get there. I don’t think he’s a horrible guy, but in the post-Bush/Cheney era, his 11th hour flips on core issues (gays, guns, abortion) just turn me off. I don’t know who’s better, but for now, I just can’t stomach this degree of ambition or “pragmatism.” Romney makes me long for the days of Bill Clinton.

My “Wicked” LDS Journey Part 8: “Wonderful”

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

This entry is 8th in a series that begins here. For the full effect, click on “Continue Reading” below, find the music player, and play the song while reading the lyrics.

Story Background: Here we see the Wizard’s softer side, and learn that he got swept up (like Glinda) in the glamor of attention. We learn that in his own way, he had (at least in part) noble intentions to help the citizens of Oz. Along w/ the allure of power and security, it’s clear he felt that the ends somewhat justified the means. Thus the deception of the veil.
The program notes also claim, “He holds out the promise to Elphaba that, with him, she can fulfill her subconscious longing to be accepted by a fatherly figure.” I can’t necessarily relate to that part of it, but maybe some of you can.

My “Wicked” LDS Journey Part 6: “One Short Day”

Friday, December 15th, 2006

This entry is 6th in a series that begins here. For the full effect, click on “Continue Reading” below, find the music player, and play the song while reading the lyrics.

Story Background: Elphaba and Galinda are both given the chance to go together to the Emerald City to meet the great Wizard of Oz. This song conveys their excitement in going to this “magical” and even “sacred” place, to meet the “greatest, goodest man on earth.” And of course, don’t forget parallels between the Oz descriptions and the plans for the LDS Mall. :)
The 2nd part of the song is simply an homage to the great and all-powerful Wizard of Oz.
