(From Rod).

Stay ’till the end. Elder Samuelson’s response to a student question is worth the wait.

Ralph Nader Coming to BYU, and Why I’m Really Glad BYU Invited Cheney

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

I first saw Ralph Nader speak while on an internship in Washington D.C.  Since then, I’ve always respected the man.  I even voted for him in 2004 when I didn’t know where to turn.

It now looks like Ralph Nader has agreed to come to BYU as an “alternative commencement” speech to Dick Cheney.  I’m gonna do everything I can to be there.
This makes me very happy.   Please consider supporting Nader’s visit by contributing here.

In my view, it has turned out to be a very, very good thing that the LDS church decided to bring Vice President Dick Cheney to BYU.  Who would have ever guessed that a sizable population of BYU students had the fight and the spirit to speak out so effectively, and so forcefully.

It gives me hope for Mormonism, frankly.  I could not be happier.

(Thanks to David for the head’s up)

If you don’t like the idea of Dick Cheney speaking at BYU …

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

If you are LDS and don’t like the idea of Dick Cheney speaking at BYU … consider writing President Samuelson and letting him know.

If you are an LDS blogger, consider making a similar post, if you are so inclined.

Also, for those interested, here’s an online petition.

Amazing Candor on Joseph Smith! Kudos to the Maxwell Institute at BYU!!!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I was up on the BYU Maxwell Institute web site, and noticed something really fascinating. Check out the “Frequently Asked Questions” blurb at the top right of the web site. It reads:

“Mormons often speak of Joseph Smith as a “martyr” who died for his religious beliefs. But Smith fought off the mob at Carthage with a pistol, killing two of them in the process, which disqualifies him as a martyr. A real martyr willingly lays down his life for Christ. ”

To me, this is amazing candor on the part of BYU’s Maxwell Institute. Kudos to you all!!!!

This is getting to be quite fun!

How do you find out that a project has not been cleared after believing that it has been cleared?  Regardless–kudos to Engebretsen for helping to further move the bar towards openness, accuracy, and candor.

The new site is: http://www.mormon-polygamy.org/

$5 for whoever can figure out if anything got changed during the takedown, and what it was.

LDS Church Kills a BYU-based Polygamy Web Site

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Last Thursday I posted about a new BYU-based polygamy web site that was somewhat interesting. On Saturday, BCC provided a link as well.

Today, the Salt Lake Tribune announced, “BYU Polygamy Web Page Dumped.”

I wish I could have been privy to the conversations and events leading up to the site being taken down. I also wonder what sparked the decision.

This LDS History on the Internet thing continues to be a pickle.  It must be really tough for the church to figure out what to do.

LDS Church Bloggers Should Always Turn OFF Comments

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Ouch. This is really, really painful. All LDS Church related bloggers should turn off comments.
