Our church is true, your church isn’t

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

It looks like the Catholic church is re-asserting itself as the “one true church”, and categorizing all other churches (Christians or not) as both inferior, and incapable of offering genuine post-mortal salvation to their respective members.

Of course many of us (as members of the LDS Church) do this as well.

In my heart and mind, this represents religion at its lowest and most divisive. I understand why churches (and members) feel the need to do this — and I know that many are sincere and even humble in their assertions of exclusive truth and authority — but in the end, it just makes me sad.

There must be a better way.

LDS Family Services: Why No Programs for Those Disaffected by LDS History and Doctrine?

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

If you go up to the LDS Family Services site, you see that the church has special programs for:

What I fail to find are any programs for members who have become troubled by LDS History or Doctrine — and experience severe trauma as a result. Certainly given the heavy activity in ex- and post-LDS web sites, there is a market/need for such outreach. Yet I can’t find anything.

Anyone know of official church outreach programs to help these folks? If there aren’t any — any guesses as to why not?  Finally, any predictions on if/when such programs might finally arrive?

More on the Jesus Christ / Joseph Smith Anti-Mormon DVD — Who is Offensive, and Why We Should Understand?

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

As a follow-up to my post here about the recently released “Jesus Christ / Joseph Smith” DVD, I wanted to share 2 thoughts.

The first is a short essay written by a man Eugene Woodbury, who I actually don’t know.  This essay was forwarded to my by my mother from the AML list.  It reads:

At the core of Mormon doctrine are a host of non-negotiable claims: that not only do practically all other Christian sects adhere to an errant theology (the Nicene creed), but their priesthood authority is null and void in its entirety. None of their saving ordinances are efficacious, and none of them are recognized.

I don’t care how much frosting you coat it with, but that’s a very bitter pill and I’m frankly mystified why we expect that other Christian denominations should swallow it with a smile, without fighting back with all the resources at their disposal.

Similarly, to claim that our missionaries aren’t “tearing down” other religions may be true in terms of process, but certainly not end result. The convert has to reject his current beliefs and his current loyalties and his current sacraments, no dual citizenship allowed. Why pretend there’s anything nice about what we’re up to (Matthew 10:34)?

The Mormon church stands as an existential (albeit philosophical) threat to the broader (Nicene) Christian fellowship. We should stop being surprised that this raises some people’s hackles, or that they believe we are as wrong and misguided and apostate as we believe they are.

I wholeheartedly agree with Brother Woodbury.
