Exploiting My 5 Minutes of Fame

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Well, it looks like Mr. Andrew Sullivan of the Daily Dish has posted a link to my blog, in response to an email I recently sent him, thanking him for helping us Mormons get out into the open air some of the more obscure, unresolved (officially, anyway) aspects of our history and doctrine as a church/people.

So…since my web site traffic has tripled in the past few minutes alone…I thought I would officially welcome all of you newcomers to my blog, and mention 3 things….

Andrew Sullivan Says to Mormons: “Get a Thicker Skin”, and Rightly So

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Andrew Sullivan has responded to the criticisms about the “insensitivity” of his posting pictures of LDS garments on his blog, in addition to other topics he covered. I commented about this topic briefly on a recent BCC post here.

Here are a couple of quotes I really like in his response:

Time to Talk, Mitt

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Wow! What are the chances of me posting 2 consecutive Michael Kinsley articles on the same blog? Must be divine intervention.

The Mitt Romney / Mormonism pot is really starting to bubble now (props to my buddy Craig for the referral).

Looks like Mitt may have to give his own Kennedyesque “keep my religion out of it” speech.

Should get even more fun–which is hard to fathom.

A Friendly Reminder to Us Bloggers: We’re All a Bit Too Solipsistic

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Michael KinsleyMichael Kinsley of Slate fame (and the co-founder of CNN’s Hardball with Pat Buchanan) wrote a lovely little essay about us bloggers on the Internet called “Why I care.”

It turns out that we’re all solipsists.

I think he’s right. Let this be a reminder to us all. For tonight, put down your keyboard and your brilliant little insight(s), and go spend time some time with a tangible loved one. :)

As for me, I’ll be right here. ;)

My Recent Radio Appearance on KVNU’s “For the People”: The Mitt Romney and Andrew Sullivan Collision

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Hey all!

Tom Grover was kind enough to invite me to guest host his radio program tonight: KVNU’s “For the People” (though I’m thinking he may be regretting it a bit now). :)

I commented about this topic briefly on a recent BCC post here, basically thanking Mr. Sullivan for helping us get out into the open things that have been hidden and suppressed (privately and publicly) for far too long.

Anyway, the main topic of discussion was Andrew Sullivan’s recent blogging research/antics regarding Mormonism and Mitt Romney’s candidacy for U.S. President. In a little under a week, Sullivan has covered:

Bigtime Political Journalist Andrew Sullivan Blogs About the Mormon/Blacks Issue

Monday, November 27th, 2006

I’m sure Mitt Romney has something to do wit this.

Check it out!

I’m not anti-Romney, but I do find this very fascinating to watch.

Hugo Chavez is Crazy–Like a Fox

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Hugo ChavezI just finished listening to an interview by Tavis Smiley of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. He’s definitely a populist, but I do enjoy his rhetoric. This was right after he called President Bush “the Devil” at the United Nations, by the way–which makes the interview only that much more interesting.

Let me know what you think.

P.S. If you don’t have an iPod/MP3 player–FREAKING GET ONE!!!!

“The Next Big Thing”

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

From my good friend Jana Remy (on behalf of a friend of hers). Please support if you are so inclined.

=======================================

Hi Folks,

Some of you may know that our son Thomas Barrett is a budding musician. He recently submitted an original song to an international competition called “The Next Big Thing” that is sponsored by the BBC. He found out this week that he was selected as one of 20 semi-finalists in the contest out of 1100 entries. His song and a brief bio are posted on the BBC World Service website. The competition is now open to public internet voting and so I am sending out the following link to friends, colleagues and family and asking them to go online and vote for Thomas!!

Anyway, here’s the link. You can listen to his song by clicking on the nominees (he is nominee # 20) and/or vote by clicking on the VOTE icon. The public may vote through November 28, 2006.

Thanks and feel free to pass the link on to all your friends, family and colleagues!!
